Jimmy Barnes

Jimmy Barnes is a Scottish-born rock singer-songwriter who grew up in Adelaide. His career, both as a solo performer and as the lead vocalist of the legendary band Cold Chisel, has made him one of the most successful and distinctive artists in Australian music history.

A prolific songwriter and performer, Jimmy has been a storyteller for more than 40 years, sharing his life and passions with Australians of all ages at over ten thousand gigs throughout his adopted homeland.

In the process he has amassed more #1 albums in Australia than the Beatles: four with Cold Chisel and eleven as a solo artist, including the iconic For the Working Class Man. Across his career Jimmy has sold over 12 million albums and he has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame twice.

Jimmy lives in New South Wales, with Jane, his wife of 36 years, their children, grandchildren and two schnauzers. As well as writing and recording new music and touring virtually non-stop, he is currently working on the second volume of his memoirs.

Matt Shanks

Matt was born in Sydney, Australia and now resides in Melbourne. Sandwiched between the bush and beach, the inspiration for his short stories comes from a love of his unique country. His early fascination for the combination of words and pictures saw him complete a Bachelor of Design at the University of Sydney in 2003.

It took him 10 years while working as a Creative Director at some of Melbourne’s best design agencies to realise that this ‘watercolour hobby’ of his needed to be shared with more than just his wife and cat.

Simplicity, humour and the art of the unseen are strong themes in Matt’s illustration work. With his strong understanding of the commercial aspects of the business from a career in design, he is a uniquely creative and pragmatic artist. He loves to work collaboratively and iteratively to achieve the best result for the audience.

Matt has previously illustrated for Papyrus greeting cards. He’s currently working on books for children with the wonderful people at Scholastic Australia and HarperCollins Australia.

Matt is a member of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and The Australian Society of Authors. For books, he is represented by the lovely Margaret Connolly.

Rosie The Rhinoceros is a board book for young readers written by Australian singer/musician and award-winning author, Jimmy Barnes. It is illustrated by Matt Shanks. Rosie has an irrepressible zest for life, for the beauty of the morning, for everything that surrounds her, and she happily shares her enthusiasm with those she meets in the savannah: the giraffes, the monkeys, the zebras, the lions, the elephants, and many more.

But when they refer to her as a rhinoceros, she corrects them: “’Look at this pretty horn’ she laughed. ‘And can’t you see my dainty hooves? Everyone knows that unicorns have dainty hooves!’” That’s certainly who she sees reflected back at her in the water. Rosie asks the elephant to call the other animals to the waterhole so she can correct their perception.

Mat Shanks’s cute and colourful illustrations enhance this sweet and joyful little book about being yourself. Jimmy Barnes has proven, with music, memoir, cookbooks and books for children, that he has more than one string to his bow. Delightful!
