"Prescriptive Stretching is more than just a book on stretching – it is a detailed resource for both trainers and the public on how to perform precision stretching correctly and how to use specific stretches when suffering particular pain patterns, such as a sore lower back or a kink in the neck. To have an itemized list of stretches to use when in pain is invaluable. For example, in the final section of the book, Programs for Pain Relief, Berg suggests that if you are suffering a tension headache you might consider trying stretches for the upper trapezius, the scalenes, the SCM, the levator scapulae and the suboccipitals (all addressed in detail earlier in the book). In this section, problem areas and their recommended stretches include: low back pain, kink in the neck, headaches, upper back pain, isolated shoulder pain and shoulder pain radiating into the arm and hand, tennis and golfers elbow and runners knee. It cannot be overstated how useful a resource like this is!
Prescriptive Stretching begins by reviewing human anatomy from the perspective of the structures involved in flexibility. The bones, muscles and muscle physiology are discussed in the opening pages, where the reader will find an easy to understand summary of muscle spindles, golgi tendon organs, fascia and trigger points. The fundamentals of flexibility is covered next, with a section on why to stretch, which, in this common age that often views stretching as unnecessary or even a waste of time, is a persuasive argument to include stretching for better movement and pain relief.
The author then discusses the basics of the practise of stretching, detailing various techniques and methods, how to properly execute the stretches and what to avoid doing as well. Next comes the main section of the book: targeted stretches for all regions of the body. Each area includes useful facts about the muscle, common causes of tightness, symptoms of tightness, tests to assess tightness, precautions, techniques and variations and common mistakes. As mentioned previously, another strength of the book is the programs for pain relief section, which includes general and specific remedies for common aches and pains.
Prescriptive Stretching a is fantastic resource for both trainers and the public seeking to move better and reduce pain in the body. The stretching techniques and remedies for common pain areas make this a highly recommended book to read and reread when presented with issues that may be relieved through targeted stretching."
