Yumi Stynes

Yumi Stynes is a writer, broadcaster, television presenter, food fanatic, former cook, fitness enthusiast and mother-of-four.

Among her daily responsibilities she presents a national radio show on the KIIS network called The 3pm Pickup. She hosts a new ABC podcast called Ladies, We Need to Talk which has consistently rated at number 1 on the iTunes charts, and zeroes in on forbidden conversations that women need to have. In 2018 she'll be fronting a couple of documentary television projects and in April she intends to take two of her children on an 84km bushwalk through the Tasmanian wilderness.

Yumi grew up in rural Victoria with a Japanese mother and finds Japanese-Australian cooking a natural fit – and in Zero F*cks Cooking, shows off some insanely easy tricks that make it easy for anyone to make Japanese food at home.

In Yumi's busy life she's always been and remains the only cook in her household and thus quite an expert in inclusive and easy food. In her Zero F*cks approach she encourages the home cook to unshackle themselves from guilt and stress and enjoy what can be done simply and well.

Dr. Melissa Kang

Most people know Dr Melissa Kang as the longest-serving expert behind the iconic Dolly Doctor column, but she’s also a practising medical doctor for marginalised young people and has academic roles at the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Sydney. She is fifth-generation Malaysian-Chinese Anglo-Australian, which makes specialising in adolescent sexuality and sexual health all the more interesting. She continues to speak about these topics in the mainstream media.

They didn’t make books like this when I was a kid. I can’t tell you how relieved I am that this is no longer the case, that kids now have easy access to information that empowers them and teaches them about boundaries.

I love that this book doesn’t even get into consent specifically related to dating and sexual activity until about halfway through. The focus before that is teaching about how consent relates to all aspects of our lives, beginning with using the example of whether you are willing to loan a t-shirt to someone.

There’s information about how other people need to seek your consent but it also talks about your responsibility in making sure you obtain consent as well. Consent is clearly explained as a two way street.

“Learning how to ask, being ready to hear the answer (whatever it is), and saying yes or no yourself are all big skills.”

Through multiple examples, you learn what is and isn’t consent, and how a pressured yes isn’t a yes at all. It’s about enthusiastic consent.

“Enthusiastic consent looks beyond words and takes into account how someone really feels about a situation, even if they’re not comfortable expressing it.”

I would have absolutely benefited from reading this book as a kid and then again as a teenager.
