George Paxinos is an internationally renowned neuroscientist who is also well known for decades of opposition to the deniers of global warming.
In 'A River Divided' he weaves the many and varied threads of his scientific expertise, his deep concern for humanity, and the politics of our environment into a rich, poetic and thought-provoking tapestry. This dense and complex novel takes us on a journey which begins two millenia before in the foothills of Israel's ancient fortress of Masada and which leads us to Australia, Italy and Argentina, and into the depths of the Amazon rainforest.
The story centres on twin brothers with a unique and extraordinary pedigree . . . but with conflicting fates. It is populated with an array of fascinating characters whose many experiences enable them to articulate their own values and concerns, many of which, unsurprisingly, mirror those of the author.
Essential for readers wishing to deepen their understanding of environmental issues. A pleasure for those who enjoy a fast-paced, intricate, and often moving story.
I enjoyed the technical underpinnings of this well-paced story which has a Hemingway-esque directness of expression that keeps the reader moving right along. It was an ambitious idea – which worked. Writing about the Man of Peace was certainly appropriate for someone named Paxinos.
It is a wonderful achievement, even if it took 21 years. I will always remember it as the book I read for Christmas 2021.
I have always been interested in Ancient History, Archeology, Genetics and Inheritance. The story that is the basis of 'A River Divided' is unique and thought provoking - what if?? The impact of one's environment is fundamental to your life and this book shows this on many levels. I truly enjoyed reading it. Well written and leads to many discussions when finished. 'A River Divided' is a book I highly recommend.
