Australia's leading sustainable architecture and landscape design magazine for inspirational stories on local and international houses, gardens and profiles. In this issue inner Melbourne architects Austin Maynard and landscape designers Lin Chew Studio collaborated on a renovation of a Victorian terrace, weaving garden spaces and architecture, blurring the boundaries and delivering a comprehensive edible garden, as requested by the clients. Up on the Sunshine Coast a couple of locals (one the founder of 7b Landscapes and Interiors) decided that their new home would invert the traditional model and have the garden as the centerpiece. They were determined to achieve a 50/50 balance of landscape and architecture and, along with Majstorovic Architects, devised a series of pods through which the garden could permeate. Two worlds collide in our travel article on Gunditjmara country. The experience of a couple of nights at Drifthouse immersed in the clever and uplifting architecture of Multiplicity is contrasted with recent award-winning architecture of another sort, within a site of enormous significance. Architecture is a simple device in the landscape of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, functioning as a tool through which we can learn about the world's oldest engineered aquaculture system. It enables contemplation of the landscape and the traditional ways of life. We had the privilege of visiting and hearing the stories directly from the Gunditjmara people as well as the process by which they worked with architects Cooper Scaife on the project. I encourage everyone to visit this World Heritage Site. Note: Issue #93 is on sale in newsagents. Your subscription commences with issue #94 (Nov-Dec).
