There are two of them in the boxing ring.
One weighs 145 pounds, stands 5 foot 5, and is twenty-six years old.
The other one? Nobody knows his weight and it doesn't matter how tall he is, he'll grow.
No one has bandaged his wrists, he's wearing boxing gloves, he's bouncing on his toes in the ring.
He's nine years old.

A dark, gripping coming-of-age tale that explores friendship and family, love and betrayal, masculinity and violence.

In the early 1980s Mafia gang wars are tearing the precariously stitched-together city of Palermo apart. A fatherless nine-year-old boy climbs into a boxing ring to face his first opponent.

Davide Enia's sweeping multigenerational saga reaches back to World War II and forward to talented young Davidu's quest to become a champion boxer for his country-a feat that has eluded the other men in his family.

A sensation when published in Italy in 2012, On Earth as It Is in Heaven is at once an intimate account of Sicilian life and devastatingly universal.

On Earth As It Is In Heaven is the first novel by Rome-based Sicilian author, Davide Enia. Living in Palermo, nine-year-old Davide has grown up with stories of the boxing career of his illustrious father, The Paladin, before his unfortunate death in a motorcycle accident. He may never have known his father, but his loving Grandmother Provvidenza, his irrepressible Great Uncle Umbertino and his gastronomic Grandfather Rosario make sure their beloved David understands his familys history: a history that includes the elusive goal of being the countrys champion boxer. Against the background of violence and danger that is the Sicilian capital, young Davide trains for that goal. Enia slowly and skilfully entwines the narrations of several characters to craft a marvellous story that reaches a dramatic and moving climax. Enias characters have a depth that encourages emotional investment by the reader for ample reward. Enia is proficient at creating both setting and atmosphere, be it a North African prisoner-of-war camp, a boxing arena or a Sicilian street: In the street behind the piazza: shouts, ambulances and police sirens. The soundtrack of Palermo. This coming-of-age tale is a delightful surprise. The boxer on the cover belies the real content and this novel does not require a love or appreciation of boxing to be enjoyed. In fact, this is a story less about boxing than about people: family and friendship, loyalty and love. There may be brutality and heartbreak, but there is also courage and humour in generous quantities. It is a testament to Antony Shugaars talent as a translator that Enias prose is so flawlessly rendered. A brilliant debut novel.
