I'm stranded on Mars.

I have no way to communicate with Earth.

I'm in a Habitat designed to last 31 days.

If the Oxygenator breaks down, I'll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I'll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I'll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I'll eventually run out of food and starve to death.

So yeah. I'm screwed.

Andy Weir

Andy Weir has always been fascinated by space travel and, like most kids growing up, wanted to be an astronaut. At the age of fifteen he was hired as a programmer for a national laboratory and worked as a software engineer before channelling his creativity into writing fiction.

His book The Martian has gone on to become a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller and a 2014 Richard and Judy Book Club pick, winning multiple international awards.

The Martian is now also a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon.

Filled with witty humour, this unique storyline has readers empathising with the stranded survivor; conveyed in a more realistic way than portrayed in the movie adaptation. A very enjoyable and engrossing book!

If you've seen the movie and loved it then it's enough to say that the book will be a fave too. The movie was adapted quite fairly so when reading this I obviously didn't have any surprises waiting for me (especially the ending). That being said, what would be overly complicated scientific jargon turned into quite humorous jabs and witty remarks. There were stages in the novel where it did get a tinsy bit boring and repetitive but that's to be expected when you're stuck on Mars for a year and a half doing the same things to stay alive. Overall though it was thoroughly enjoyable :)
