Fortune Cookie is the story of Simon Koo's journey as a Chinese-Australian into the post colonial world of Singapore. While Bryce Courtenay's latest novel does have its redeeming qualities, the quintessential Courtenay passion of "Power of One", "Mathew F...linders Cat" and "The Potato Factory" series is missing. Fortune Cookie is redeemed through it's historical analysis in part of the early Chinese immigration into Australia and mainly through it's look into the regeneration of post Colonial/Malaysia Singapore. At one stage the writer seems to be entranced by the sex industry on offer to both local and expat business men followed by an almost a fantastical storyline rushing to an all emcompassing rush to the finish line. Fortune Cookie would be a great book to take on holiday or for when you need a lighter yet slightly enlightening read. It just feels that Bryce Courtenay wasn't able to produce the same level of passion and insight that his previous novels displayed overwhemingly. Still a big fan but Fortune Cookie just didn't live up to the expectations I have of this wonderful writer.
