With its intoxicating mix of murder mystery and a fateful love story, A Dangerous Crossing is an enthralling novel in the great tradition of Agatha Christie and Patricia Highsmith.

1939, Europe on the brink of war: Lily Shepherd leaves England on an ocean liner bound for Australia, escaping her life of drudgery for new horizons.

She is instantly seduced by the world onboard: cocktails, black-tie balls and beautiful sunsets. Suddenly, Lily finds herself mingling with people who would otherwise never give her the time of day.

But soon she realizes her glamorous new friends are not what they seem. The rich and hedonistic Max and Eliza Campbell, mysterious and flirtatious Edward and fascist George are all running away from tragedy and scandal even greater than her own.

And by the time the ship docks in Sydney, two passengers are dead, war has been declared, and life will never be the same again . . .

“For weeks, the ship has been like a world within itself, a vast floating city outside the normal rules . . .”

'An exquisite story of love, murder, adventure and dark secrets, Rachel Rhys brings this dangerous crossing brilliantly and beautifully alive' - Lisa Jewell

'Thrilling, seductive, utterly absorbing.' - Paula Hawkins

I LOVED this book! I used to read a lot up until about 5 years ago when, for some reason, I stopped. Don't know why. But since then, reading has been like a chore and something I felt like I forced myself to try do, but clearly didn't want to since I kept making excuses. This book is EXACTLY what I needed to get back into it, and the experience has left me excited to start reading another book right after this review.

Yes, the book may seem mildly anti climatic (though, this is something I only noticed because I had read a review that pointed it out). Don't get me wrong, there's definitely little scandals and information that keeps you on your toes, and I personally connected to the main character, Lily, so much that I wanted everything to work in her favour as though she was me. This kept me reading for hours on end. The novel is definitely more a journey, as I read in someone else's review, than an action packed, thrilling suspense story, but it's done so well. As someone who loves going on cruises, this book made me feel like I was back on a cruise. It follows the main character, Lily, as she is on her way to Australia. She meets a number of people along the way who are quite mysterious and unique characters. It's overall very interesting, and you want to know more and more about them.

I don't really know how to put it, but this book is brilliant. I love the writing style, it's so captivating and I cannot wait to see what more author Rachel Rhys will publish in future. I'll definitely read them! I started this book at an unfortunate hour of the night on a Tuesday night, so I couldn't read more than 270 pages before having no choice but to sleep. I finished the book FIRST THING when waking up, before even eating breakfast, brushing my teeth or even getting out of bed.

I strongly recommend this book if you're into drama and a hint of mystery, wondering about everyone's characters. :)
