Joan Lindsay

Joan Lindsay was born in Melbourne, where she went to school as a day-girl for a few years at Clyde Girls Grammar, then situated in East St Kilda. She knew and loved the Macedon district – the area in which The Picnic at Haging Rock is set from early childhood.

In 1922, in London, she married Sir Daryl Lindsay. The Lindsays travelled together in Europe and the USA, Daryl with his paints and Joan with her typewriter. Sir Daryl died in 1976.

Joan lived at their country home on the Mornington Peninsula, Mulberry Hill, Victoria, Australia. She died in December 1984.

It took me a very long time to read this, but I am very glad that I finally did. It is a frustratingly good Australian mystery, surrounding the mysterious disappearance of a couple of schoolgirls and one of their school teachers at a Valentines Day picnic at Hanging Rock, Mt Macedon. What was surprising is that their vanishing at the Rock is not the only unexplained occurrence in this story. It is an unsettling read and the Australian bush in the year 1900 is the perfect backdrop.
