Fang is the sixth novel in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. The action starts with the Flock flying to Africa to feed the hungry as part of a promotion for the Coalition to Stop the Madness. Here they meet billionaire scientist Dr Hans Gunther-Hagen, who tries to enlist their support for his experiments. They also meet another bird kid, Dylan, who is supposedly a perfect match for Max. Angel predicts that Fang will die soon. Back home in Nevada, they do some research and conclude Dr. H-Gs another evil scientist. Tension grows between Flock members as Max and Fang focus on each other. Mr Chu and Jeb turn up again, as do another batch or Erasers. This instalment has plenty of action: fights, guns, explosions, a Flock wedding, defection by several members of the Flock, the death of a Flock member, a leadership tumble, and a showdown where Angel points a gun at Max. Patterson makes a token effort to increase youth awareness of the effects of hunger, HIV and civil war in Africa by giving them a crash course (a paragraph or two) in food, fuel and climate. Theres also a mention of stem cell research and experimentation on human children. Patterson states his goal is to get more kids to read: a pity his writing is of such low quality. This one has a poorly thought-out plot, the dialogue lacks the wit, humour and snap of the previous books, and some the characters act like they have been possessed by aliens. I wonder if the next instalment, Angel, will be any better?
